About
Dot Avatar Maker is a one-page 3D character studio. You choose a form, a colour, a finish and a look; the character is built from scratch and lit in front of you; then you take it away as an image or a page.
The mascot
Dot is the default character — a yellow plush dot with a pink heart clip, two glossy eyes and a habit of blinking while you think. She is not a drawing and not a photo. She is assembled in code: simple shapes with a fabric surface, a soft studio light and a little breathing animation.
Because she is code, she can be anything the studio can express. Swap her body for a cloud, her plush for chrome, her clip for an astronaut helmet — it is all the same dot underneath.
No image generator, no model, no queue. Just geometry, materials and light.
Every form is a small recipe — a sphere, a stretched capsule, an extruded outline — built when you pick it, then smoothed and cached. Nothing is a pre-made 3D file.
Plush finishes displace the surface with a procedural fibre texture, then adjust shading. Felt, velvet and suede are shading models rather than textures, which is why they stay sharp on a 1024-pixel export.
A key light above and in front, a soft fill, a rim to separate the character from the background, and a hand-built environment that gives metal and glass something real to reflect.
Hats, clips and eyewear are placed by firing rays at the finished body, so a crown finds the top of the head on any silhouette instead of floating in space.
The same WebGL stage draws the big preview, the little gallery thumbnails and the export capture, on a shared context so a page full of dots stays smooth.
The 3D export inlines your character and a tiny viewer. One HTML file, no build step, no server — open it anywhere.
A static site and a hand-written JavaScript engine. Rendering is three.js over WebGL2, bundled locally rather than loaded from a CDN, so the studio works offline once the page is cached. Type is Poppins and Inter, self-hosted. The mark, the mascot and every gallery character were produced by the studio itself.
The project is small on purpose: four controls, two export formats, one character.
Dot Avatar Maker is an independent studio for making dot-style 3D characters. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to OpenAI, and it is not the official editor for the Dots product or any other avatar tool. Trademarks belong to their owners; the characters you make here are yours.
